This pre-professional program represents an exciting collaboration between Shea’s Performing Arts Center and Theatre of Youth (TOY) to create the highest caliber of instruction for experienced young people with serious plans to pursue the performing arts.
Students will work with professional teaching artists to explore the techniques of Michael Chekhov, Bogart & Landau, Uta Hagen, and Kristin Linklater, which represent a stylistic breadth of theatre values that are usually taught in college and graduate school. By introducing these concepts at the high school level, this program provides WNY students with a head start on their study in theatre and the performing arts.
Participants audition to be enrolled, and must be entering grades 9-12 as of August 10, 2020.
This partnership between Shea’s and TOY represents our shared values and our awareness of the positive impact of theatre on children and adolescents. Research reflects the myriad ways that theatre education can improve communication, socio-emotional development, organization, listening, problem-solving, creative thinking, and many other essential 21st Century Skills.

The Actor’s Edge is a collaboration between Shea’s Performing Arts Center and Theatre of Youth (TOY). Both theatres are located in the heart of Buffalo, NY.
The Shea’s Performing Arts Center Department of Arts Engagement and Education seeks to facilitate multiple opportunities for everyone in Western New York to experience arts engagement, arts integration, and arts education. (TOY) stimulates the imagination, nurtures the creative spirit and enhances the education of young people by engaging them in relevant, child-centered, and professionally-produced live theatre programs. TOY believes in meaningful childhood experiences in the theatre to develop confidence in creative thinking skills, cultivate empathy and establish a life-long connection to the arts.
